The Sound of Shattering Glass...

My sleep life is, at best, interrupted.  When you live with a 19 year old who comes and goes, well, a lot.  And 11 cats, a dog and several chickens and are now inadvertently hosting several families of raccoons nightly, your slumber is bound to be interrupted...

Add to this advancing age and post menopausal sleep disturbances and well, I call it a great week if I sleep all the way through the night more than one night a week.  I know my sleep was more disturbed when my children were little, but I swear it doesn’t feel that way now.

I woke up at 2 am this morning, wondering if my daughter came home (she didn’t) and then checked my text messages to see where she was.  She was fine, safe just staying at a friend’s house.  Ok, all good.  I got back to sleep, blessedly.

I was sleeping so soundly, it was magic.  So amazing, I felt like I was floating...that was until I was jolted awake by the sound of breaking glass...no, it was SHATTERING glass.  I leapt up from bed, ran to the kitchen in my underwear and slippers...

I didn’t think it was a window or that someone was breaking in.  I knew that it was most likely a cat culprit...and I was correct.

Dear sweet absolutely rotund Delilah had been trying to obtain the last few treats in a glass canister in the laundry room and for her efforts, she succeeded.  However, the remaining four treats now were covered in shattered glass.  Neither she nor I were happy about the result.

Then, because they are cats, all of the rest of them had to come investigate. One of them insisting that he had to, right that second, use one of the litter boxes immediately in the shatter zone instead of using one of the other ones located elsewhere.  Fucker.

It isn’t fun to be barely awake and have to deal with glass everywhere.  I wasn’t ready, I was barely functional and didn’t really have a lot of time because the dog and other cats were all VERY interested in what was going on.  This is NOT my favorite way to be awakened...

I got the glass cleaned up, vacuumed which is very hard to do with a dog that hates the vacuum but I can’t let outside because all of the broken glass is in front of the door that leads to the backyard...I will admit there was lots of yelling.

No one, including me, got hurt so that was good.  But I will own that it didn’t start my Sunday off well.

I went back to bed and just laid there for awhile to allow my nervous system to reset itself.  It would have been nice if Delilah would have come to snuggle as an apology but alas that did not happen.  She remained posted in the kitchen hoping breakfast would come early.  It did not.

This is just one of the things you get used to hearing when you live with this many other beings...I would like to report that this was the first and only time I was jarred awake by the sound of shattering glass, but I could not report that and have it be accurate.  And alas, I know it will not be the last time either...

I love my animals, I really, really do...but cleaning up broken glass exactly one minute after you were awakened by the breaking of the glass is not a great deal of fun.

But such is life with cats...

Again, still...
