Way Opens, Way Closes...

It is a Quaker saying which really lands with me today mostly because it has been my experience...

I have come to understand the path I am “supposed” to be on is the one I am on and if the path closes, then way closes...and then, when everything feels dark and lonely and wrong, and something happens, regardless of whether or not I think it is what is supposed to happen next, way opens.

I have come to rely on this in my life.

Way opens...

Way closes...

Over and over and over again.

I know exactly what is supposed to be happening because it is actually happening.  For so long in my life, I lived with this idea that things SHOULD be different.  There was supposed to be this other thing going down, this other thing happening.  But somewhere in the intervening years, I stopped believing that.  I mean, it didn’t change that I sometimes really want something ELSE to be going down.  But I think somewhere along the years, I stopped believing my own propaganda.  I just finally saw that whatever was happening, was what was SUPPOSED to be happening...

Way opens...

Way closes...

And this is really the only thing I need to know.

It doesn’t matter what I want.

It doesn’t matter what I need.

It doesn’t matter what I would prefer.

It just matters what is happening.

And I have come to trust that whatever is occurring is the way.

So all I need to do now, is just accept what is occurring as being the path.  And life, doing its thing, will shortly open or close or be humdrum or whatever.  And all I need to do is just accept what is.

My God is it a better way to live!

I would love to tell you that I do all of this opening and closing and altering and accepting well.  And I don’t. But I do, more and more often.  The passing of years allows for me to find acceptance easier and easier.  Age bleeds off the indignation of youth, giving way for a more quiet acceptance to flourish and take root.

Way opens...

Way closes...

Again, still...

Perhaps, it is only with advancing age that we are given the gift of acceptance with this path and all its opening and closing.  Realizing we are always led to what is meant for us...

Again, still...
